AMTD’s The Art Newspaper Secures Hong Kong Registration, Debuts Inaugural HKSAR Edition
AMTD-owned The Art Newspaper received Hong Kong SAR registration and launched its inaugural Hong Kong edition during Art Basel Hong Kong 2026. AMTD plans a direct owner-model launch of The Art Newspaper China in October 2026 to expand its Asia media footprint.
1. Government Registration and Launch
The Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration of Hong Kong SAR officially approved The Art Newspaper’s registration, enabling AMTD to publish the combined March–April 2026 Hong Kong edition during Art Basel Hong Kong 2026. This inaugural issue marks the resumption of a locally produced edition under AMTD’s full ownership.
2. Background and License History
AMTD acquired 100% of The Art Newspaper in 2023, and the previous licence with Modern Media Company expired on October 1, 2023. Since then there had been no monthly editions in China or HKSAR until the recent government approval and launch.
3. Upcoming China Edition
AMTD will introduce The Art Newspaper China in October 2026 under a direct owner-model, eliminating franchisee involvement. All editorial, production and distribution will be managed in-house to strengthen intellectual property protections.
4. Strategic Expansion in Asia
This registration and regional launch support AMTD’s goal to broaden its media and entertainment division across Asia. The move leverages The Art Newspaper’s status as a partner for major art fairs to drive advertising, subscriptions and brand visibility.
