Biogen Cuts Most Apellis Pipeline, Suspends Empaveli DGF and FSGS Trials
BIIB•Biogen has halted investment in most Apellis legacy research programmes, suspending Phase II Empaveli trials in delayed graft function and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and curtailing its preclinical pipeline. The company will also reduce Apellis R&D headcount while doubling down on Phase II Syfovre combination trial and pegcetacoplan commercialisation.
1. Pipeline Cuts
Three months after acquiring Apellis for $5.6bn, Biogen has stopped funding most of Apellis’ legacy research programmes. Phase II studies evaluating pegcetacoplan in delayed graft function and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis have been suspended pending strategic review, and the fate of preclinical RNA, gene editing and oral complement inhibitor candidates is undecided.
2. R&D Team Reductions
As part of the pipeline review, Biogen will cut a small number of research positions within the former Apellis team. Details on the exact headcount reduction have not been disclosed, reflecting a shift toward streamlining operations around core assets.
3. Strategic Focus on Core Asset
Biogen remains committed to its Phase II Syfovre combination trial in geographic atrophy and expects its pegcetacoplan franchise to generate approximately $785m by 2032. The move signals prioritisation of commercial value over broad early-stage research.
