Boeing Gains FAA Authorization for 777X Phase 4B Certification Testing
BA•Boeing has received FAA authorization to begin the largest remaining segment—Phase 4B Type Inspection Authorization testing—on its delayed 777X program, covering avionics, stability, control and pilot system interaction. CEO Stephanie Pope noted this key approval brings the long-delayed widebody jet closer to final certification and customer delivery.
1. FAA Approves Phase 4B Testing
Boeing has secured FAA authorization to start Type Inspection Authorization Phase 4B, the largest remaining segment of the 777X certification process focused on avionics performance, aircraft stability and control, and pilot interface under supervised flight testing.
2. Remaining Certification Milestones
With this approval, Boeing must still complete at least one additional TIA phase and final evaluations before the 777X can achieve full certification and proceed to customer handovers, following years of pandemic disruption and technical challenges.
3. Financial and Operational Implications
The 777X is central to Boeing’s long-term commercial recovery, with potential to unlock billions in deferred revenue once deliveries commence, support fleet modernization for major airlines, and alleviate capacity constraints in the widebody segment.
