Canada's Nutrien Q3 profit misses estimates on higher costs, lower crop nutrient sales
NTR•Nutrien reported Q3 adjusted earnings of $0.61 per share, below the $0.82 analyst estimate, while sales rose 1% to $6.06 billion and beat estimates. The company revised 2026 retail EBITDA and fertilizer sales volume guidance and plans to close its White Springs phosphate facility in 2027.
1. Quarterly results
Nutrien reported Q3 net earnings of $288 million and adjusted EBITDA of $1.31 billion, below the $1.34 billion estimate. Sales were $6.06 billion, above the $5.74 billion estimate. Higher global fertilizer benchmarks and record potash sales volumes boosted earnings, while reduced nitrogen sales volumes and higher sulfur costs weighed on results.
2. Guidance and facility
Nutrien revised its 2026 retail adjusted EBITDA guidance to $1.72 billion-$1.85 billion and raised its potash sales volume guidance to 14.3 million-14.8 million tonnes. It cut its phosphate sales volume guidance to 2.40 million-2.55 million tonnes and plans to shut its White Springs phosphate facility in 2027 following a strategic review.
3. Segment pressures
Retail earnings benefited from higher proprietary products gross margins and a strong livestock market in Australia, offset by lower crop nutrient sales volumes and higher fuel costs. Higher sulfur input costs reduced phosphate earnings, partly offset by stronger global benchmark prices.
