Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE will deploy an 8MW/40MWh battery energy storage system at Axpo’s Rizziconi power plant in Calabria, marking its first project in Italy. Construction starts late 2026 with commercial operation expected early 2028, using SolBank 3.0 blocks and EQ-S Energy Management System to boost grid flexibility in southern Italy.
Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE subsidiary has secured an agreement with an Axpo unit to install its inaugural battery energy storage system at the Rizziconi combined-cycle gas power plant in Calabria, expanding its footprint into the Italian market.
The project comprises an 8MW/40MWh BESS featuring Canadian Solar–manufactured SolBank 3.0 battery blocks and proprietary EQ-S Energy Management System. Construction is scheduled to commence late 2026, with grid connection and commercial operation targeted for early 2028.
By capturing midday solar energy and delivering flexibility services via an established interconnection at the gas plant, the system will alleviate grid constraints and lower power costs in southern Italy. This milestone underpins e-STORAGE’s broader European expansion strategy.
