Cognizant Launches Headless API for AI Agents in Prior Authorization Workflow
CTSH•Cognizant has launched a headless API for TriZetto Unify that treats AI agents as first-tier users, beginning with Electronic Prior Authorization using three HL7 FHIR-based endpoints. The platform serves over 200 million U.S. healthcare members and processes more than $500 billion in annual healthcare spend.
1. TriZetto Unify Headless API Rollout
Cognizant’s new headless API model treats AI agents as first-tier consumers of the TriZetto Unify platform, allowing fully automated access without a user interface. This approach opens enterprise workflows to machine-to-machine interactions while preserving governance and oversight for regulated healthcare operations.
2. Electronic Prior Authorization Features
The initial rollout focuses on Electronic Prior Authorization, exposing three HL7 FHIR-compliant API resources to confirm authorization requirements, identify necessary documentation and submit requests. These endpoints enable AI agents to handle the bulk of routine prior authorization tasks at machine speed under human supervision.
3. Industry Impact and Compliance
This release aligns with CMS Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule requirements, with payer compliance obligations starting in 2026 and API mandates in 2027. By embedding policy-governed agent access, Cognizant helps payers and providers reduce administrative burden without compromising clinical judgment.
4. Platform Reach and Future Plans
TriZetto Unify currently supports over 200 million healthcare members and processes more than $500 billion in annual spend across claims, eligibility and prior authorization workflows. Cognizant plans to extend agent-ready access across its entire Unify roadmap over the coming year.
