GM-LG Ohio Plant Delays Return of 850 Workers to August
GM•Ultium Cells Ohio, jointly owned by GM and LG Energy Solution, has postponed the return of 850 temporarily laid-off workers until August due to weak EV demand. The Warren plant previously cut 850 jobs and permanently eliminated 480 positions, resuming only a small number of roles this month.
1. Ultium Cells Postpones Return-to-Work
Employees at the Warren, Ohio battery plant, which is co-owned by GM and LG Energy Solution, were informed that their return-from-layoff date has moved from June to August. Those on temporary layoff status since January will remain idle until the new schedule takes effect.
2. Layoffs and Workforce Changes
Last fall the plant temporarily laid off 850 workers and permanently eliminated 480 positions as part of a cost-management effort. A small number of employees were briefly recalled this month, but full production staffing will now wait until August.
3. Market Weakness Drives Decision
The decision follows a detailed analysis of electric-vehicle market trends, including reduced consumer incentives after the $7,500 federal tax credit expired. GM and other automakers have cut EV factory output to align production with softer demand.
