Delta to Fit VCT Finlets on 240 Boeing 737NG Fleet
DAL•Delta will install VCT finlets on its 240 Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER aircraft after comprehensive flight test and CFD analysis to reduce drag. These aerodynamic devices are expected to lower fuel consumption and cut carbon emissions across its global 737NG fleet.
1. Installation Program Overview
Delta has committed to equipping its entire Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER fleet—240 aircraft in total—with Vortex Control Technologies’ finlet modification package following an in-service evaluation. The program covers aerodynamic performance validation, flight testing, operational trend analysis, and computational fluid dynamics assessment to ensure safety and efficacy.
2. Expected Efficiency Gains
Finlets are designed to reshape airflow along the aft fuselage, reducing vortices and drag. Delta projects measurable reductions in fuel burn and carbon emissions, contributing directly to operating cost savings and sustainability goals by optimizing pressure distribution and minimizing flow separation.

With jet fuel accounting for about 90% of Delta’s carbon footprint, this retrofit supports the airline’s broader environmental commitments and long-term operational economics.
