EU vote on Tesla's supervised self-driving system pushed back
TSLA•An expected EU vote on allowing Tesla's supervised Full Self-Driving system across the bloc has been delayed from October. The next apparent opportunity for a decision is in December, based on the current meeting agenda.
1. Vote delayed
The October 6 agenda for the EU's Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles lists a continuation of discussions on the Dutch request for an Article 39 authorisation, not a vote. The next scheduled committee meeting after October is in December, making it the earliest apparent opportunity for a vote based on the current agenda.
2. Approval requirements
An EU-wide rollout requires support from 15 of the bloc's 27 member states, representing 65% of its population. Several countries, including Sweden, have expressed concerns about FSD exceeding speed limits; countries that approved the system say drivers remain responsible for following traffic laws.
3. Tesla's European push
The Dutch regulator approved the system in April, and Belgium and several other countries followed. Tesla has called approval key to boosting sales in Europe, where it is seeking to regain market share amid competition from Chinese electric-vehicle makers.
