1. New task force
The US military is setting up Task Force Iron Gate to help restrict Iran’s movement of advanced weapons systems and other sanctioned material across its land borders and the Caspian Sea. The task force will be based in Tampa, Florida, coordinate with other US government agencies, and focus on dual-use goods and illegal revenue streams.
2. Blockade impact
Admiral Brad Cooper, the Central Command commander, said closer coordination with US government agencies would further constrain Iran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and replenish its military. Central Command estimated that the naval blockade has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil.
