FedEx Launches OneRail-Powered Same-Day Delivery with 1,000+ Courier Network
FedEx will roll out a same-day local delivery service via OneRail, leveraging a network of over 1,000 couriers for two-hour or end-of-day options. The initiative targets small-parcel volume from Best Buy, Walgreens, GameStop and PetSmart while matching UPS's Roadie and Delivery Solutions without fixed last-mile costs.
1. Strategic Shift to Outsourced Same-Day
FedEx is exiting its own last-mile delivery model for e-commerce sellers due to unprofitable economics and is instead partnering with OneRail to source final-mile couriers. This approach lets FedEx focus on global logistics while accessing flexible local delivery capacity without fixed infrastructure costs.
2. Service Features and Merchant Offering
FedEx SameDay Local will provide merchants with two-hour or end-of-day delivery options, white-labeled to preserve brand control and customer data. The service taps OneRail’s technology to automatically match orders to the optimal driver from a network of more than 1,000 providers, complete with live tracking and proof-of-delivery.
3. Competitive Positioning
This launch puts FedEx directly up against Amazon, Walmart, DoorDash, Instacart and UPS’s Roadie and Delivery Solutions platforms. By offering a scalable, outsourced model, FedEx aims to recapture small-parcel volume from major retailers like Best Buy, Walgreens, GameStop and PetSmart without expanding its fixed delivery workforce.
