FedEx to close nine New York centers and Pittston facility under Network 2.0 plan
FedEx will close nine ship centers in New York and one in Pittston, Pennsylvania on May 2 as part of its Network 2.0 plan targeting a 30% footprint cut through over 475 closures by 2027. Sixty-three employees face layoffs; Pittston deliveries shift to Wilkes Barre and some staff are reassigned.
1. Facility Closure Details
FedEx will shutter nine New York ship centers in June—including facilities in Binghamton, Elmira, Syracuse, Buffalo, Plattsburgh, Ithaca, Conklin, Watertown and Utica—and its Pittston, Pennsylvania center on May 2, reallocating operations to the nearby Wilkes Barre hub.
2. Workforce Impact
A total of 63 employees at the Pittston facility will be laid off, though some will be offered roles elsewhere within FedEx. Delivery functions will transfer to the Wilkes Barre center, which joins two existing ship stations serving the Scranton area.
3. Network 2.0 Strategy
Launched in late 2022, Network 2.0 unifies express and ground delivery into one surface network to reduce excess capacity and streamline routes. To date, over 360 ship stations have been optimized; FedEx aims to cut its national facility count by 30% via 475 closures by the end of 2027, with 25% of daily volume now routed through reprogrammed sites.
