GM battery material supplier Vianode explores partnership or sale
GM•Norwegian synthetic graphite producer Vianode is seeking a partner to fund its next expansion phase and is open to a partnership or full takeover. It aims to secure a partner by year-end and needs additional funding to complete its Ontario plant, which could supply material for about 2 million EVs annually.
1. Seeking a partner
Vianode CEO Burkhard Straube said the company is seeking capital, industrial expertise or a broader strategic relationship for its next expansion phase. Vianode has hired JPMorgan to help with the process and is open to outcomes ranging from a partnership to a full takeover.
2. Ontario plant needs funding
Vianode is building a synthetic graphite plant in Ontario that could supply material for about 2 million EVs annually, but it needs additional funding to complete the facility. Production is scheduled to start in 2029.
3. GM supply agreement
Vianode counts General Motors among its customers, and GM signed a multibillion-dollar agreement in January 2025 for the company to provide synthetic graphite anode materials for EV batteries. Vianode has operated a plant in Norway since 2024, with capacity expected to reach 2,000 metric tons per year, enough for about 35,000 EVs.
