GM Delays 2028 Next-Gen EV Trucks at Factory Zero Plant

GM has indefinitely delayed its next-generation full-size electric truck program at the Detroit-Hamtramck Factory Zero plant, postponing planned 2028 production of updated GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Escalade IQ and Hummer pickup. The move follows weaker consumer demand and recent layoffs of 1,300 workers.

1. Program Suspension

GM has indefinitely delayed its next-generation full-size electric truck program at the Detroit-Hamtramck Factory Zero facility, citing the need to align production with current market demand. The decision postpones any public timeline for new versions of GMC Sierra EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Escalade IQ and Hummer pickups.

2. Revised Production Timeline

GM had targeted a 2028 launch for its refreshed EV truck lineup but now provides no scheduling details for these models. The original plan included production ramps for the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Escalade IQ and Hummer SUV and pickup in the latter half of the decade.

3. Demand and Incentive Pressures

EV sales declined in the two quarters after the federal $7,500 tax credit expired on September 30, 2025, and consumer uptake of large electric pickups remains slow. GM consolidated most EV assembly at Factory Zero last year and has paused lines and reduced shifts to better match output with demand.

4. Workforce Adjustments

The program delay follows temporary layoffs affecting around 1,300 hourly workers at Factory Zero and previous production stops. GM’s broader EV strategy has shifted focus toward smaller, more affordable electric vehicles and hybrids where market traction is stronger.
