General Motors Invests Tens of Millions to Upskill Kansas Workers for Three Vehicle Launches

GMGM

General Motors is investing tens of millions at its Kansas City Fairfax plant to boost wages and train workers ahead of three new vehicle launches: Equinox, Buick compact SUV and Bolt EV. This follows GM’s $500 million U.S. apprenticeship and $66 million education investments to enhance production readiness.

1. Q4 2025 Earnings Beat and 2026 Guidance

General Motors reported adjusted fourth-quarter EPS of $2.51, surpassing consensus estimates of $2.26 and driving an 8.8% rally in late January. Revenue for the quarter totaled $45.29 billion, a 5.1% year-over-year decline and just shy of $45.8 billion expected by analysts. Management announced a 20% dividend increase and authorized a new $6 billion share repurchase program. For full-year 2026, GM projects adjusted EPS between $11 and $13, implying approximately 13% growth over 2025, when adjusted EPS was $10.07. Net income for 2025 fell to $2.7 billion due to $7.2 billion in one-time charges related to electric vehicle capacity reductions and supply-chain settlements.

2. Electric Vehicle Strategy and Mobility Partnerships

GM’s electric vehicle segment continues to scale, with production underway for the Hummer EV, Chevy Silverado EV and Cadillac Lyriq. The company’s Ultium Drive system and battery plants in Ohio, Tennessee and Lansing are central to its goal of reaching segment profitability in 2026. GM’s self-driving unit plans to start charging fares in 2025, and a strategic partnership with a major rideshare platform will integrate robotaxis into its network. Cost reductions in battery manufacturing and ongoing investment in vertical integration underscore management’s commitment to long-term e-mobility leadership.

3. Workforce Investments and Operational Adjustments

GM is investing tens of millions of dollars to upskill employees at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City ahead of simultaneous launches of three new models, including the next-generation Buick compact SUV and a gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox. Over the past five years, GM has allocated $500 million to U.S. manufacturing apprenticeships and upskilling programs, training approximately 2,500 workers annually at its Technical Learning University. Conversely, the company will cut approximately 500 jobs in Canada when it eliminates a shift at its Oshawa, Ontario facility, reflecting broader efforts to align capacity with demand and tariff-driven cost pressures.
