Google Partners on 933-MW Texas Gas Plant as Microsoft Unveils AI Models

Google has partnered with Crusoe Energy to build a 933-MW natural gas power plant at its Goodnight Texas datacenter, which could emit 4.5 million tons of CO2 annually. Microsoft’s roll-out of three AI models for transcription, voice generation and image creation intensifies cost and usability competition with Google’s AI offerings.

1. Goodnight Campus Gas Plant Partnership

Google has joined Crusoe Energy to develop a 933-MW natural gas power plant on its Goodnight campus in Armstrong County, Texas, named after a nearby town. Crusoe filed a permit in January indicating the facility will operate off-grid and supply energy to at least two datacenter buildings, with construction visible in satellite imagery.

2. Emissions and Climate Strategy Implications

The permit application shows the plant could emit up to 4.5 million tons of CO2 per year—exceeding annual emissions of a city like San Francisco. This marks one of Google’s first direct investments in fossil fuel infrastructure and signals a significant shift from its previous pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

3. Intensified AI Competition from Microsoft

Microsoft recently introduced three in-house AI models for transcription, voice generation and image creation, emphasizing lower pricing and ease of integration. These developments heighten competitive pressure on Google’s AI business, where cost-per-query and scalability are critical factors for enterprise customers.
