Google Announces 2026 Release of Slimmer Audio-Only and Projection AI Glasses

Google plans to launch two AI-powered smart glasses in 2026: an audio-only model and a projection-enabled pair, following withdrawals of its 2013 and 2017 Glass iterations (the latter aimed at workplace use) by 2023. The new designs emphasize slimmer form factors and AI integration with Maps, Search, and Gmail.

1. Google Prepares Third-Generation AI Glasses for 2026

Alphabet is reviving its smart-glasses initiative for the third time, more than a decade after the original 2013 launch and the 2017 enterprise version, both withdrawn by 2023 due to weak adoption. In December 2025 the company announced two new products slated for 2026: an audio-only “AI Glasses” model and a second version featuring transparent display projections on the lenses. Early promotional footage suggests a major redesign focused on reducing bulk and improving aesthetics, addressing the look-and-feel concerns that plagued earlier iterations and earned wearers the derisive nickname “Glassholes.” To boost social acceptability, Alphabet is working with fashion brand partners and emphasizing form factors more closely aligned with conventional eyewear.

2. Google Cloud Posts Record Backlog, Predicts Sustained Momentum

Alphabet’s cloud division generated $15.15 billion in revenue and $3.59 billion in net income during the third quarter of 2025, representing year-over-year net-income growth of 85% and a profit margin of 23.7%. The unit’s order backlog stood at $155 billion, up 82% over 12 months and 46% sequentially, reflecting strong demand for AI-optimized infrastructure. As the world’s third-largest cloud provider with a 13% market share, the division is on track to double 2024 net income of $6.1 billion, with management targeting profitability north of $20 billion in 2026 through continued integration of custom Tensor Processing Units and Nvidia GPUs.

3. Alphabet Leverages AI Integration Across Core Products

Alphabet is embedding its Gemini large language model throughout its flagship services—Search, Maps and Gmail—to drive engagement and revenue. In the most recent quarter, Google Search query volume and monetizable clicks increased by mid-single digits, aided by AI-enabled answer boxes and conversational features. On the device front, the company is planning tighter integration between its upcoming AI Glasses and existing services, such as overlaying real-time Maps directions in the user’s field of view. Meanwhile, Alphabet’s in-house AI research is exploring new sensor integration—heart rate, body temperature and even EEG—opening potential for future health and productivity applications within wearable form factors.
