Health insurers, hospitals rally after sweeping Democratic midterm win
XLV•Shares of Medicaid-focused insurers and hospital operators rose 6% to 8% or more after Democrats won both chambers of Congress, as investors anticipated possible delays to Medicaid-related provisions and improved prospects for extending ACA subsidies.
1. Shares rise after election
Shares of Centene climbed more than 8%, Molina Healthcare rose about 6% and Elevance Health gained about 3% in early trading on Wednesday. Hospital operators HCA Healthcare, Tenet Healthcare and Universal Health Services gained between 6% and 8%.
2. Policy outlook remains uncertain
Analysts said Democrats’ sweep of the Senate and House could delay parts of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill that are expected to reduce Medicaid enrollment and constrain certain state healthcare payments. The result could also improve prospects for extending enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. J.P. Morgan analysts said major policy changes remain unlikely because Trump could veto Democratic bills, while Jefferies analysts cited his comments about working with a Democratic-controlled Congress.
