Huntington Ingalls Launches DDG 128 Flight III Destroyer; Onboards 50 Trainees

Ingalls Shipbuilding launched its second Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Ted Stevens (DDG 128), joining 36 delivered vessels with five more under construction and seven in pre-planning under a distributed shipbuilding initiative. Newport News Shipbuilding secured 32 high school seniors for trade roles and 18 apprentices at the Apprentice School.

1. Flight III Destroyer Ted Stevens Sails Away

The Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Ted Stevens (DDG 128) sailed away from Ingalls Shipbuilding on May 8, en route to Norfolk ahead of commissioning in Whittier, Alaska. It is the second Flight III delivery featuring the AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar and Aegis Baseline 10 system, with five more ships under construction and seven in early planning supported by a distributed shipbuilding initiative to accelerate throughput.

2. High School Seniors Commit to Shipbuilding Careers

Newport News Shipbuilding hosted the New Horizons Regional Education Centers Career Selection Day, securing 32 high school seniors for full-time trade positions and 18 students for its HII-funded Apprentice School. This initiative aims to strengthen HII’s future workforce by funding apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeship programs directly from local schools.
