IBM Unveils $10B Quantum Computing Plan for 100M Gate System by 2029
IBM•IBM plans to invest over $10 billion through 2029 in quantum computing, funding R&D, manufacturing expansion and acquisitions to deliver a fault-tolerant, large-scale system capable of 100 million gate operations. That follows a $1 billion federal grant matched by IBM and drove shares up 3% with most analysts rating buy.
1. Investment Plan Overview
IBM disclosed a plan to allocate more than $10 billion over the next five years toward quantum computing initiatives. The funding will cover research and development, capital expenditures, manufacturing expansion and targeted acquisitions aimed at delivering a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum system by 2029 capable of executing 100 million gate operations.
2. Government Funding and Anderon
The initiative follows a $2 billion federal funding package under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, of which IBM secured a $1 billion grant matched with its own capital. IBM will use the matched funds to establish Anderon, a dedicated quantum semiconductor foundry in Albany, New York, focused on producing specialized superconducting wafers.
3. Market Reaction and Analyst Ratings
Shares of IBM climbed 3% upon the announcement of the quantum investment plan, reaching record highs. Analyst sentiment remains bullish, with 13 of 21 analysts rating the stock as buy, seven as hold and one as sell.
