1. Surprise Nike Collaboration Sparks Secondary Market Surge

Costco’s unannounced release of the Nike SB Dunk Low x Kirkland Signature sneaker on January 30 in four states led to an immediate wave of consumer interest and secondary-market activity. Priced at $134.99 in New York, Oregon, California and Washington, the grey colorway—complete with sweatshirt-style exterior and multiple Kirkland emblems—sold out in hours. Within 72 hours, resale listings on platforms such as StockX, eBay and GOAT showed markups exceeding 200%, with asking prices reaching as high as $1,000. The limited drop included 660 pairs traded on StockX alone, where the highest completed sale was $600, underscoring a robust demand for Costco’s private-label crossover. The branding nods—ranging from a removable Costco Executive Membership–style hang tag to an insole graphic referencing the chain’s $1.50 hot dog—highlight the retailer’s savvy approach to value perception and inventory scarcity signals.

2. Institutional Investors Modify Costco Exposure

In its latest SEC filing, Independent Advisor Alliance disclosed a 2.1% reduction in its Costco holdings during the third quarter, selling 686 shares to end the period with 32,229 shares, representing 0.8% of its portfolio. The position was valued at approximately $29.8 million at quarter-end. Meanwhile, Principal Financial Group increased its stake by 0.7%, adding 8,259 shares to reach 1,210,837 shares, equivalent to 0.27% of its assets and valued at roughly $1.12 billion. Other notable movements include a 49.3% stake increase by Silver Oak Securities to 3,780 shares and a new $874,000 position established by Permanent Capital Management. Collectively, institutional ownership stands at 68.5%, signaling confidence in Costco’s low-margin, high-volume model despite broader market volatility.
