Intel and Google Expand AI Tie-Up with Xeon 6 CPUs, IPUs; Intel Joins Musk’s Terafab
Intel and Google expanded their AI partnership to deploy Intel’s latest Xeon 6 processors for inference and general-purpose computing and to co-develop custom infrastructure processing units (IPUs). Intel also joined Elon Musk’s Terafab AI chip project and plans to buy back Apollo’s stake in its Ireland Xeon fabrication plant.
1. Expanded AI CPU Deployment
Under the renewed alliance, Google will continue deploying Intel’s Xeon 6 processors to support inference and general-purpose AI workloads, addressing rising demand for CPUs capable of handling heavy AI deployment tasks.
2. Custom IPU Co-Development
Intel and Google will co-develop infrastructure processing units (IPUs) that offload compute tasks from CPUs, aiming to deliver balanced systems optimized for performance, efficiency and flexibility in modern AI applications.
3. Terafab AI Chip Project Participation
Intel has joined Elon Musk’s Terafab initiative alongside SpaceX and Tesla, positioning the company to contribute advanced chip designs and fabrication expertise for AI-driven robotics and data center use cases.
4. Ireland Fabrication Plant Buyback
Intel agreed to repurchase Apollo Global Management’s stake in its Irish Xeon server processor facility, securing full ownership and reinforcing production capacity for its AI-focused CPU lineup.
