JERA teams up with Dell, RHAELM on Japan AI infrastructure, building data centre near Tokyo

DELL•JERA, Dell Technologies and RHAELM signed an MoU to develop a standardised model for AI infrastructure, starting with a $15 billion, 400-megawatt-class data centre in Chiba. The facility is expected to begin operating in phases in 2028 and reach full capacity in 2029.
JERA will provide land near its Chiba thermal power station, while RHAELM will develop, construct, operate and finance the data centre. JERA will supply 400 MW of power capacity for 15 to 25 years, and Dell will provide standardised, rack-scale AI infrastructure.
The companies aim to use a repeatable model to reduce the time and complexity of developing AI data centres, with the potential to deploy it in other markets. They aim to develop several gigawatts of AI data centre capacity across Japan in the 2030s, using other JERA power stations.
