LyondellBasell, Amcor and Mondelēz’s Marabou target 100% rPE chocolate packaging
LYB•LyondellBasell has partnered with Mondelēz’s Marabou chocolate brand and Amcor to develop packaging containing post-consumer recycled polyethylene sourced from its MoReTec advanced recycling facility. The collaboration aims to launch 100% rPE chocolate wrappers by year-end 2027 and scale local recycling capacity in Europe.
1. Collaboration Launch
LyondellBasell has formalized a partnership with Mondelēz International’s Marabou chocolate brand and packaging specialist Amcor to co-develop chocolate wrappers incorporating post-consumer recycled polyethylene. The agreement sets out joint R&D milestones and supply commitments to integrate rPE into Marabou’s premium packaging.
2. Advanced Recycling Technology
The project will leverage LyondellBasell’s MoReTec advanced recycling platform, which converts mixed plastic waste into food-grade resin. This technology enables the production of high-purity recycled polyethylene suitable for direct food contact applications.
3. Sustainability and Market Scale
Partners aim to introduce commercially available wrappers with 100% recycled content by the end of 2027, reducing virgin plastic use. The collaboration includes plans to expand feedstock sourcing across Europe and optimize logistics to meet increasing consumer demand for sustainable packaging.
