Marcus Theatres Offers Free Large Popcorn at 78 Locations on January 19
Marcus Corporation’s Marcus Theatres division will give a free large popcorn to every ticket purchaser on January 19, 2026, at its 78 locations nationwide. Each ticket holder also receives a scratch-off card redeemable for concession offers between February 1–28, 2026.
1. Marcus Theatres Drives Foot Traffic with National Popcorn Day Promotion
Marcus Theatres, a division of Marcus Corporation (NYSE:MCS) and the fourth-largest U.S. theatre circuit, is leveraging National Popcorn Day on January 19, 2026, to strengthen customer engagement and drive concession revenues. Across its 78 locations in 17 states—comprising 985 screens—Marcus Theatres will offer one free large popcorn per ticketed guest and distribute scratch-off cards redeemable for complimentary concession items (Super/Ultra combos, ICEEs, fountain beverages, candy and additional popcorn) from February 1 through February 28, 2026. The promotion builds on the chain’s existing loyalty program, which already provides free popcorn every Value Tuesday, and includes in-theatre popcorn-themed activities like make-your-own jewelry and bingo.
By offering a low-cost giveaway with high margin potential, Marcus expects to boost midweek attendance and offset the promotional cost through ancillary sales. Concession margins in the theatre industry often exceed 80%, and management projects a 5%–7% uptick in per-capita concession spending during the promotion period. This event also serves as a customer acquisition tool, encouraging repeat visits and loyalty-club sign-ups, with the company reporting a 12% increase in loyalty memberships following similar past campaigns. Investors should note the temporary marketing expense will likely be offset by higher ticket and concession revenues in Q1, while reinforcing Marcus’ competitive positioning against larger national chains.
