Mastercard adds instant Agoda travel redemptions, suspends cards in Brazil
Mastercard’s partnership with Agoda enables instant travel redemptions in its loyalty programs, marking the first direct booking integration into its rewards ecosystem. Following Brazil’s central bank liquidation of Will Financeira SA, Mastercard has suspended cards linked to the collapsed Banco Master unit, potentially affecting transaction volumes in the country.
1. Mastercard Expands Rewards Through Agoda Partnership
Mastercard announced in January 2026 a strategic partnership with Agoda to integrate instant travel redemptions directly into its loyalty platforms, a move set to roll out across 30 loyalty programs representing over 400 million cardholders by mid-2026. Under the agreement, participating loyalty programs will allow members to redeem points or miles at checkout on Agoda’s platform without transferring to an external travel portal. This digital-first experience supports more than 2 million properties in 200 countries and territories, offering real-time pricing and availability. Initial pilots with three major issuers demonstrated a 25% increase in redemption rates compared with traditional point-transfer models, and average transaction values rose by 18%, highlighting the potential for enhanced user engagement and incremental merchant fees for Mastercard. The collaboration underscores Mastercard’s emphasis on experience-driven rewards as cardholders increasingly seek flexible, on-demand travel benefits rather than fixed-value statement credits or gift cards.
