Mercedes-Benz to Debut Nvidia-Powered A.I. Chip and Autonomous System in US
At CES, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled a more efficient A100 successor chip for Mercedes’ autonomous car programs that will start shipping in Q4. Mercedes-Benz confirmed its advanced driver-assistance system will enable supervised autonomous operation on US city streets when it launches later this year.
1. Strategic Partnership with Nvidia to Accelerate In-Vehicle A.I.
Mercedes-Benz Group AG has formalized a multi-year collaboration with Nvidia to integrate next-generation AI semiconductor technology into its vehicle lineup. At CES, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled a new system-on-chip architecture designed specifically for automotive applications, promising a 50% increase in compute performance per watt over the previous generation. Mercedes-Benz plans to deploy the new processors in its 2025 electric S-Class and EQS models, with pilot shipments to begin in Q4 2024. Management projects that the enhanced AI capabilities will enable over-the-air updates to advanced driver assistance features, potentially reducing R&D expenses by up to €200 million over three years through shared hardware platforms across multiple model lines.
2. U.S. Launch of Advanced Driver-Assistance System
Mercedes-Benz Group AG will introduce an upgraded driver-assistance package on select U.S. models later this year, allowing supervised autonomous operation on mapped city streets in Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco. The system combines lidar, radar and high-definition cameras with neural-network inference running on the Nvidia hardware, enabling adaptive cruise control, lane centering and automated intersection handling at speeds up to 45 mph. Regulatory approvals are already secured in California and Florida, and the rollout is expected to cover 25,000 vehicles in 2025, contributing an estimated €300 million in incremental revenue. Executives emphasize that consumer subscription options for real-time traffic updates and feature expansions could add recurring revenue streams of up to €50 million annually by 2026.
