Merlin introduced Merlin Pilot for Commercial Cargo as the inaugural member of its Condor product family, aiming to bring its core AI-powered autonomy to large multi-crew transport aircraft. The system is designed to manage flight systems, environmental monitoring, and communications from takeoff to touchdown, allowing crews to focus on critical decision-making.

Merlin Pilot has completed hundreds of flights across diverse platforms and reached its Preliminary Design Review on the C-130J under a $100M+ USSOCOM contract ceiling. This PDR milestone advances Merlin’s civil certification path and sets the stage for integration and flight testing in Part 25 cargo aircraft.

The global large cargo aircraft fleet is expected to grow from 2,340 to 3,900 units over the next two decades, with 2,800 production and conversion deliveries forecasted. This expansion, driven by rising air freight demand, underscores the potential for autonomous systems to address pilot shortages and scale operations.

Merlin is collaborating with World Star Aviation and engaging leading cargo conversion players to integrate Merlin Pilot during Passenger-to-Freighter conversions and new builds. These partnerships aim to establish turnkey pathways for operators to retrofit autonomy into existing freighter airframes and upcoming deliveries.
