Meta Plans WhatsApp Usernames for 3 Billion Users and Builds Arena Prediction App
META•Meta will let 3 billion WhatsApp users reserve unique usernames later this year to enhance privacy and user growth. Meta shares fell as part of a 10% June slump in the Magnificent Seven during $700 billion AI capex concerns, and the company is developing its “Arena” prediction-market app.
1. WhatsApp Username Rollout
Meta will let 3 billion WhatsApp users reserve unique usernames later this year, enabling users to connect without sharing phone numbers. The feature prohibits public browsing of usernames and reserves Facebook and Instagram names for existing owners to mitigate impersonation and scam risks.
2. June Share Slump and AI Capex Pressures
Meta shares contributed to a 10% decline in the Magnificent Seven index in June as investors reacted to an industry-wide AI infrastructure spend projected to exceed $700 billion in 2026. Heavy capital expenditures on chips and data centers have raised concerns over free-cash-flow pressures and balance-sheet leverage.
3. Development of the Arena Prediction App
Meta is building a standalone prediction-market app, internally codenamed Arena, targeting rivals like Kalshi and Polymarket. The platform aims to open new engagement avenues and diversify revenue sources by allowing users to bet on event outcomes without exposing phone numbers.
