Micron Loses Nvidia HBM4 Contract as SK Hynix Takes 70% Supply

MUMU

Micron’s projected share of Nvidia’s HBM4 orders for its Vera Rubin AI chips has been cut to zero, with SK Hynix and Samsung securing 70% and 30% respectively due to tougher specs. Nvidia raised data-transfer speed targets above 11 Gbps, a threshold Micron failed to meet.

1. Nvidia Narrows HBM4 Suppliers

Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin AI accelerator will source HBM4 almost entirely from SK Hynix and Samsung, with SK Hynix slated to supply about 70% and Samsung 30%, effectively eliminating Micron from the vendor list.

2. Micron Fails to Meet Enhanced Specifications

Industry engineers report Nvidia raised HBM4 data-transfer speed targets above 11 gigabits per second late last year, a performance benchmark that Micron was unable to satisfy during qualification testing.

3. Samsung Prepares HBM4 Mass Production

Samsung is gearing up for mass production of HBM4 for AI infrastructure and expects to begin shipping chips to Nvidia by the third week of February, positioning itself alongside SK Hynix as a primary HBM4 supplier.
