Microsoft brings more AI to PCs as it challenges Apple
MSFT•Microsoft unveiled an AI coding model that runs directly on PCs, security technology for AI agents and a new Nvidia-powered laptop. It said Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia will use its execution-container tools; analysts cited pricing as a key question after Nvidia raised the DGX Spark price about 75% to $6,950.
1. AI tools for Windows
Microsoft unveiled an AI coding model designed to run on personal computers and Microsoft Execution Containers, which the company said will prevent agents from accessing data or performing unauthorized tasks. Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia will use the tools, Microsoft executive Pavan Davuluri said. CEO Satya Nadella said the company wanted to make the desktop a secure place for agents to operate.
2. New Nvidia-powered laptop
Microsoft also presented the Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by Nvidia chips, as it seeks to run AI tasks such as writing code directly on PCs rather than in the cloud. The event followed years of work between Microsoft and Nvidia to bring those tasks to desktops and laptops.
3. Cost remains a question
Analysts said pricing will be a major question after a memory-chip crunch drove up computer costs. Nvidia recently raised the price of its DGX Spark AI desktop by about 75% to $6,950, citing rising costs for its 128 gigabytes of memory. Analyst Anshel Sag said hardware was now too expensive for many people to run AI locally.
