Pinterest Signs $4 Billion AWS Deal for AI and Platform Modernization
PINS•Pinterest has agreed a $4bn deal with AWS through 2031, its largest infrastructure commitment ever, to support AI workloads, including model training on AWS Trainium and expanded Graviton usage. The company will migrate to Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service to modernize its platform and improve reliability, developer velocity and efficiency.
1. Overview of the AWS Deal
Pinterest has entered into an 11-year, $4bn cloud services agreement with AWS, marking the largest infrastructure commitment in its history. The partnership, which extends to 2031, builds on collaboration since 2010 and aims to underpin the company’s next phase of AI-driven development and platform growth.
2. AI and Compute Technologies
Under the deal, Pinterest will leverage AWS Trainium silicon for large language and vision-language model training and inference. The company will also expand use of AWS Graviton processors, which currently handle around one third of its compute workload, to support advanced AI features.
3. Kubernetes Migration
Pinterest plans to transition from traditional EC2-based environments to Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). This shift to a Kubernetes-based architecture is expected to boost operational reliability, accelerate developer workflows and enhance overall infrastructure efficiency.
4. Expected Platform and User Impact
The enhanced infrastructure will serve over 600 million monthly users by powering features like the Pinterest Assistant and personalized visual search. Improved compute flexibility and efficiency are also expected to drive better advertiser performance and faster rollout of AI-driven discovery tools.
