Redwire Wins Belgian Defence MATTEO Contract for First National Security Satellite
Redwire has secured a prime contract to build Belgium’s first national security satellite, MATTEO, fully funded by Belgian Defence and designed to deliver secure, resilient space-based services. The MATTEO mission, co-developed with Aerospacelab, supports Belgium’s National Defence Industrial Technology Base strategy and enhances monitoring and response capabilities.
1. Contract Award and Mission
Redwire has been awarded a prime contract by Belgian Defence to design and deliver the MATTEO satellite, marking Belgium’s first dedicated national security spacecraft. The mission will provide secure, resilient and independent space-based services tailored to national defence priorities.
2. Joint Development with Aerospacelab
MATTEO will be co-developed with Aerospacelab, combining Redwire’s proven mission assurance track record with Aerospacelab’s satellite manufacturing expertise. This partnership aligns with Belgium’s National Defence Industrial Technology Base strategy to bolster domestic space capabilities.
3. Belgian Heritage and Future Programs
Redwire’s Kruibeke, Belgium facility, with over 50 years of spacecraft platform heritage supporting ESA Proba missions, will lead MATTEO’s development. The site also underpins Redwire’s role as prime contractor on ESA’s Skimsat technology demonstrator, leveraging strong European and defence partnerships.
