Rocket Lab Acquires Motiv Space Systems to Bolster Mars Robotics and Orbital Power
RKLB•Rocket Lab has completed the acquisition of Motiv Space Systems, gaining a 50-person team and Mars-proven robotics including the Perseverance rover’s multi-degree freedom arm, actuators and precision mechanisms. This deal deepens Rocket Lab’s vertical integration for end-to-end Mars mission solutions and supports high-power orbital infrastructure like data centers and mega-constellations.
1. Acquisition Completion
Rocket Lab finalized its purchase of Motiv Space Systems, now rebranded as Rocket Lab Robotics, adding a 50-strong team and manufacturing facilities in Pasadena. Motiv’s robotic arm on the Perseverance rover, precision filter wheels and multi-degree freedom actuators deliver proven performance for planetary exploration.
2. Enhanced Vertical Integration
Integrating Motiv’s motion control systems and precision mechanisms enables Rocket Lab to produce solar array drive assemblies, antenna and propulsion gimbals, and focus mechanisms in-house. This consolidation reduces supply-chain dependencies and positions the company to offer complete launch and spacecraft solutions from design through deployment.
3. Market Expansion
Rocket Lab Robotics equips the company to pursue national security contracts requiring autonomous robotics in remote or contested environments and to lead commercial orbital data center initiatives demanding over 100 kilowatts of continuous solar power. The acquisition also supports development of mega-constellations by supplying critical precision-driven subsystems at scale.
