Rocket Lab will acquire Iridium in an $8 billion cash and stock transaction, adding 66 low Earth orbit satellites and narrowband non-terrestrial networking to its portfolio. The deal positions Rocket Lab to challenge SpaceX’s Starlink by combining launch capabilities with Iridium’s maritime, aviation and defense connectivity assets.
Rocket Lab agreed to acquire Iridium in an $8 billion cash and stock transaction, combining its launch business with Iridium’s satellite network.
Iridium operates a 66-satellite low Earth orbit constellation offering satellite voice, data connectivity, GPS positioning and defense department contracts through narrowband non-terrestrial networking, push-to-talk services and flight tracking.
The deal aims to give Rocket Lab end-to-end control from launch to connectivity, enabling it to offer integrated satellite communications services and directly compete with SpaceX’s Starlink in specialized markets like maritime, aviation and government.
Rocket Lab must develop its next-generation heavier-lift rocket, secure funding for additional satellite deployments and integrate Iridium’s operations to achieve scale and cost competitiveness.
