September nonfarm payrolls data
SPY•U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose by 29,000 in September, below the 90,000 forecast, while the jobless rate increased to 4.2% from 4.1% in August.
1. Jobs and unemployment
The U.S. Labor Department reported a 29,000 increase in nonfarm payrolls in September, compared with a 133,000 increase in August and a 10,000 decline in July. The jobless rate was 4.2%, up from 4.1% in August; labor force participation was 61.8%.
2. Pay and industries
Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% in September to $37.81 and were up 3.0% from September 2025. Private payrolls increased by 46,000, while government payrolls fell by 17,000.
