Stellantis considers selling or sharing Rennes, Cassino and Madrid plants with Chinese partners
Stellantis is exploring sale or sharing of European plants in Rennes, Cassino and Madrid with Chinese partners such as Dongfeng to address surplus production capacity. It will cease production at Poissy after 2028 and is examining joint arrangements to access technology and reduce costs across its 20-site European network.
1. Sale or sharing talks
Stellantis has begun discussions with prospective buyers and Chinese automakers such as Dongfeng, whose representatives have toured plants in Rennes, Madrid, Cassino and other Italian and German sites. The company is evaluating full sales or shared manufacturing deals to reduce surplus capacity and secure technology partnerships.
2. Poissy conversion and production halt
The Poissy plant near Paris will cease production after 2028 as part of a wider operational review, prompting potential job losses and supplier impacts for firms like Lear and Forvia. Management aims to optimize its 20 European assembly sites by reallocating capacity and investing in high-demand models.
3. Political and union responses
Labour unions have staged protests over planned capacity cuts, highlighting concerns about worker layoffs and local economic effects. Any partnership with Chinese firms is expected to face political scrutiny in France ahead of next year’s election, while Italy has signaled openness to foreign automotive investment.
