Sunrun, Renew Home and Tesla to Provide 16.8 GW Flexible Power for Data Centers
RUN•Sunrun, Renew Home and Tesla will aggregate 16.8 GW of home energy capacity to supply hyperscale data centers across key U.S. markets. Deployable within months, it taps hundreds of thousands of batteries and 8 million smart thermostats to free grid capacity, ease congestion and lower household energy bills.
1. Partnership Details
Sunrun has teamed with Renew Home and Tesla to aggregate existing distributed energy resources. They will deliver 16.8 gigawatts of flexible capacity from home batteries, smart thermostats and vehicle-to-grid systems to hyperscale data centers and utilities.
2. Capacity Deployment
The framework leverages hundreds of thousands of home batteries and over 8 million smart thermostats, requiring no additional hardware or land and can be deployed in months rather than years. In Virginia, more than 300 megawatts is available now, expanding to 500 megawatts by 2030.
3. Grid Benefits
Aggregated resources will free transmission capacity, alleviate distribution congestion and extend available dispatchable power while lowering household energy bills. The solution also supports ancillary services such as peak shaving, locational grid relief and fast-response protocols.
4. Growth Outlook
This partnership positions Sunrun to tap new revenue streams from capacity-as-a-service offerings and accelerate data center interconnections. First-come, first-served allocation of capacity could spur rapid engagement from hyperscalers, with potential for multiple additional gigawatts nationwide.
