Tesla Lags with 42 Texas Robotaxis as Musk Eyes $3.4 Trillion SpaceX Merger
TSLA•Tesla has registered 42 autonomous vehicles under Texas's new DMV requirement, far behind Waymo's 577, Avride's 317 and Nuro's 47 robotaxis as its service expands in Austin, Dallas and Houston. Elon Musk has publicly discussed merging Tesla with SpaceX to create a combined $3.4 trillion enterprise.
1. Autonomous Vehicle Registrations in Texas
Texas's new law required autonomous vehicle operators to register fleet sizes with the DMV, revealing 577 registrations for Waymo, 317 for Avride, 47 for Nuro and 42 for Tesla as of May 28. Registered fleets also include 12 MOIA microbuses and self-driving truck totals for Aurora (91), Gatik (64), Kodiak AI (33) and Waabi (13).
2. Tesla's Robotaxi Fleet Growth
Tesla launched its robotaxi service in Austin last summer and has since extended operations to Dallas and Houston, yet its 42 registered vehicles indicate it remains well behind rivals in fleet scale and market penetration across Texas.
3. Musk's Tesla-SpaceX Merger Ambitions
Elon Musk has publicly proposed merging Tesla with SpaceX, which he values as part of a combined $3.4 trillion enterprise, a move that could reshape corporate structure and shareholder dynamics across both companies.
