Toyota commits $3.6 billion to move Tacoma production to San Antonio plant
TM•Toyota will invest $3.6 billion to shift most mid-size Tacoma pickup production from Mexico’s Guanajuato plant to its San Antonio, Texas, facility. The project expands capacity at the Texas plant and aligns output with U.S. demand for the model.
1. Investment Overview
Toyota has earmarked $3.6 billion to reallocate the bulk of its mid-size Tacoma pickup assembly from its Guanajuato, Mexico, facility to its San Antonio, Texas, plant. This capital outlay covers new equipment, tooling and site upgrades to support the relocated production lines.
2. Facility Expansion
The San Antonio complex will undergo expansion of its stamping, welding and paint operations to accommodate the Tacoma’s body-in-white process. Management forecasts the enlarged facility will reach full Tacoma assembly capacity by 2028.
3. Strategic Implications
Shifting production domestically reduces logistics and tariff exposure while boosting responsiveness to U.S. market shifts. The move also strengthens Toyota’s investment footprint in Texas and may influence future model allocations across North America.
