Transocean Scores $1B Barents Rig Deal and Brazil Extensions
Transocean won roughly $1bn in contracts including a 1,095-day deal for its Barents rig in Norway at $450,000 per day, boosting backlog by $490m with options to 2034. In Brazil, Petrobras extended Deepwater Orion and Aquila contracts by 1,095 and 365 days, adding $420m and $160m to backlog.
1. Barents Rig Secures Norway Contract
Transocean Barents semisubmersible rig has been awarded a 1,095-day contract by Vår Energi, starting mid-Q2 2027 at a daily rate of $450,000. This agreement adds approximately $490m to the firm backlog, excluding mobilisation and demobilisation, and includes options extending operations in Norwegian waters through 2034.
2. Deepwater Orion Extension in Brazil
The Deepwater Orion drillship received a 1,095-day extension from Petrobras, adding roughly $420m to the backlog and carrying commitments through March 2030. Prior to the extension’s March 2027 commencement, existing backlog related to Orion will decrease by about $20m.
3. Deepwater Aquila One-Year Extension
Petrobras also approved a 365-day extension for the Deepwater Aquila, sustaining operations until June 2028 and contributing about $160m in incremental backlog. Between April 1, 2026 and the extension start in June 2027, Aquila’s existing backlog is expected to decline by approximately $10m.
4. Backlog Boost and Strategic Implications
The combined awards add nearly $1.07bn to Transocean’s contract backlog, reinforcing its position in ultra-deepwater and harsh-environment drilling. These multi-year contracts secure deployment of high-spec rigs and provide revenue visibility into the next decade.
