Trump renews bid to fire Fed's Cook with fresh White House inquiry
TLT•Trump ordered a White House committee to investigate allegations that Fed Governor Lisa Cook made false statements on mortgage applications and recommend whether there is cause to remove her. A closed hearing is scheduled for November 5.
1. White House hearing
A White House committee will question Cook in a closed hearing for up to four hours on November 5. The committee will recommend whether Trump has cause to remove her after Cook submits any post-hearing statement by November 10.
2. Cook challenges allegations
Cook's lawyers said a fair hearing would show she did not commit mortgage fraud and that there is no legal basis to fire her. Trump first tried to remove Cook in August 2025; the Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that he could not remove a Fed governor at will and must follow a process allowing for a defense.
3. Political and Fed context
The hearing is scheduled two days after congressional elections that will determine whether Republicans retain control of the House and Senate. The Senate confirms presidential nominees to the Fed, and removing Cook would create a vacancy on the seven-member board. Senator Elizabeth Warren called the hearing a “kangaroo court.”
