Vanguard S&P 500 ETF Nears $1 Trillion, Extending $200B Lead Over SPDR Trust
SPY•Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) is nearing $1 trillion in assets, extending its lead over SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) to roughly $200 billion. SPY has shed $7 billion of net flows year-to-date despite the S&P 500’s near 10% gain, hindered by its 0.09% fee compared to VOO’s 0.03%.
1. VOO Approaches $1 Trillion Milestone
The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF has amassed nearly $1 trillion in assets, making it the largest ETF ever and surpassing SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust by approximately $200 billion.
2. SPY Experiences Net Outflows This Year
SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust has seen roughly $7 billion of net outflows year-to-date, even as the S&P 500 index has climbed nearly 10%, limiting its ability to grow assets without inflows.
3. Fee Gap and Brand Advantage
The 0.09% expense ratio of SPY is three times higher than VOO’s 0.03% rate, and Vanguard’s reputation for low-cost indexing continues to attract long-term buy-and-hold investors over the SPDR fund.
