Walmart Joins Cotton Trust Protocol, Targets 50M Acres Managed by 2030
Walmart has joined the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, gaining access to independent verification and aggregated data on six sustainability metrics for U.S.-grown cotton supply chains. This membership advances Walmart’s 2030 goal to manage 50 million acres of land and restore one million square miles of ocean and bolsters traceable sustainable cotton sourcing.
1. Walmart Joins U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol
Walmart has become a member of the voluntary U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, marking a strategic step to integrate sustainable cotton sourcing into its global retail operations. The retailer will now participate in a science-based program designed to drive transparency and continuous improvement in the U.S. cotton supply chain.
2. Platform Provides Traceability and Verification
The Trust Protocol offers aggregated data on six key sustainability metrics — land use, soil health, water management, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use and fiber quality — and ensures independent third-party verification. Membership grants Walmart full visibility into the movement of U.S.-grown cotton, including Protocol-certified bales, through its logistics and distribution network.
3. Alignment with 2030 Sustainability Targets
This collaboration supports Walmart’s ambitious environmental targets to manage 50 million acres of land and restore one million square miles of ocean by 2030. By reinforcing traceable sustainable cotton sourcing, Walmart aims to strengthen its supply chain resilience and meet rising consumer demand for responsibly produced textiles.
