Container ship sinks near Hormuz after being hit by projectile, sources say
USO•The Singapore-flagged GFS Pride, a container ship with capacity for 2,824 TEU, sank near the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by a projectile. The dry bulk carrier Cape Dao, damaged in a September 23 attack, was also reported to be sinking.
1. Two vessels reported sinking
The GFS Pride sank near the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by a projectile, maritime security sources said. A navigational warning from Pakistan’s Hydrographer said containers were floating near the vessel and cautioned mariners.
2. Cape Dao also in danger
The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao was reported to be sinking near the strait after an unsuccessful rescue attempt. It had been struck by a projectile on September 23, maritime security sources and British maritime risk management group Vanguard said.
3. Shipping losses and tactics
The GFS Pride is the second vessel to sink since the US-Iran war began on February 28, according to data from the International Maritime Organization. Two senior Iranian officials said Iran is deploying new tactics to target ships transiting the strait as it seeks to keep oil prices high and influence the US midterm elections.
