CVS Health Enables Emergency 10-Day Refills Ahead of Storm, Expands Low-Cost Care

CVSCVS

CVS Health is preparing for a winter storm by offering emergency 10-day prescription refills in emergency-declared states, sending refill reminders and stocking batteries and first-aid supplies. CVS also plans to expand low-cost primary care clinics and free virtual preventive services for its 185 million plan members to enhance affordability and access.

1. Proactive Storm Preparations by CVS Pharmacy

CVS Pharmacy has launched an extensive outreach campaign to more than 87 million Caremark plan members and retail customers in regions forecast to experience heavy snow, ice and power outages. Using text, email and phone alerts, the company has reminded patients to refill prescriptions early and stocked over 9,000 retail locations with emergency essentials—bottled water, batteries and first-aid supplies—to ensure communities have access to critical items as conditions deteriorate.

2. Emergency Refill and Delivery Measures

Through CVS Caremark, the company is authorizing one-time emergency refills of a 10-day medication supply for plan members in all states under official emergency declarations, an initiative expected to benefit up to 5 million high-risk patients. CVS Specialty has proactively contacted 50,000 patients on complex therapies to arrange secure alternate delivery routes, including leveraging temperature-controlled lockers and courier services in areas with potential road closures.

3. Aetna Member Support and Care Access

Aetna’s clinical response teams have intensified engagement with over 37 million Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial members, enabling emergency care at any in-network facility without prior authorization. The insurer will temporarily waive copays for urgent care visits if members present storm-related needs, and has expanded its Resources For Living program to offer 24/7 mental health phone support and community resource navigation to both existing and non-plan participants.

4. Employee Safety and Store Continuity

CVS Health is contacting its 300,000 U.S. colleagues in impacted areas to provide crisis support through its employee assistance program and to offer relocation grants where necessary. All stores will comply with local evacuation orders; should closures exceed 24 hours, incoming calls are rerouted to open pharmacies, and vaccination appointments are automatically rescheduled with notifications sent via text or email. Store status updates will be published in real time on CVS.com’s Store Locator tool.
