Europe Capital Partners sees French debt strains increasing political pressure on ECB
TLT•Europe Capital Partners said French debt strains could increase political pressure on the ECB and threaten its independence and the euro’s credibility. France’s public debt is approaching 120% of GDP, while political figures have called for ECB intervention or cancellation of French debt held by the Eurosystem.
1. Debt and political pressure
Europe Capital Partners said French political tensions could threaten ECB independence and euro credibility. With public debt approaching 120% of GDP, France has limited borrowing capacity as further tax increases or spending cuts become politically difficult. Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National is calling for ECB intervention to lower borrowing costs, while Jean-Luc Mélenchon has proposed cancelling French public debt held by the Eurosystem. French sovereign bonds and the euro are already reacting to the tensions.
