Fastea Capital flags SpaceX Starlink move as rising threat to telecom operators
XLC•Fastea Capital flagged Starlink’s planned direct-to-handset service as a threat to European telecom operators. SpaceX bought spectrum for about $8 billion and is targeting a late-2027 launch, while European operators pursue consolidation and cost cuts.
1. Operators seek savings
Bouygues, Free and Orange agreed in June to buy SFR for 20.35 billion euros, a deal that would reduce France to three operators pending clearance. Deutsche Telekom is targeting about 2.5 billion euros in savings by 2030 through automation, including AI-driven processes.
2. Starlink targets handsets
SpaceX bought spectrum for about $8 billion to enable Starlink-to-handset service indoors, with launch targeted for late 2027. Fastea Capital said the move could create a direct competitor that bypasses mobile towers and challenges incumbents’ network-based business models.
