GM•Ultium Cells, GM’s joint venture with LG Energy, has initiated production of lithium iron phosphate batteries tailored for energy storage systems. This launch broadens GM’s battery lineup beyond electric vehicle cells and positions the company to address emerging stationary storage markets.
Ultium Cells, the joint venture between GM and LG Energy, has commenced manufacturing lithium iron phosphate cells specifically for stationary energy storage applications. Production began in early July at its existing U.S. facility, marking the company’s first venture into non-automotive battery markets.
The introduction of LFP chemistry diversifies GM’s battery portfolio, complementing its nickel-manganese-cobalt cells for electric vehicles and targeting the fast-growing stationary storage sector. This lower-cost cell option may boost battery margins and help GM capture new revenue streams in energy markets.
