Google enters massive 3.6-GW power deal with Constellation Energy
Google contracted for 3,590 megawatts of power from Constellation Energy, including 890 megawatts from nuclear plants set for upgrades and an additional 2,700 megawatts from its PJM supply. The deal is expected to enable more than $4.3 billion in new investment by Constellation.
1. Power supply deal
Google signed a 20-year power purchase agreement for 890 megawatts from multiple Constellation-owned nuclear plants, which would be upgraded to produce more electricity. The first upgraded plant is expected to deliver power in 2028. Google also agreed to a long-term supply of 2,700 megawatts from Constellation in PJM, not tied to a specific generation source.
2. Grid and reactor upgrades
The 11 nuclear units expected to be upgraded are in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, within PJM Interconnection. The companies said the deal responds to PJM management’s proposal that data center customers bring their own power or risk being remotely shut off from grid power during peak demand.
